Early Winter 2005 Update!

SOME 2000 YEAR OLD WISDOM FROM LUCRETIOUS, Roman Poet, 97-54 BC

From, “The Nature of Things”

How sweet it is when stormy winds assail
The mighty main, safe on shore to view
Another’s sore distress; not that tis joy
To feel another’s woe, but that tis sweet
To know thyself from like affections free.
Sweet too, to scan war’s panoply far-flung
Across the plain, thyself from danger free.
Yet Naught more gladsome than to hold secure
Those heights serene, by wise men’s doctrine reared,
From which thou mayst lookdown, and all about
Behold thy fellows, wandering here and there,
Search for the way of life and find it not,
Striving with native wit and noble birth,
Straining both night and day with toil supreme
To master wealth and stand forth Lords of Things!

AMERICA'S CUP NEWS FROM VALENCIA

Critical Date for Challengers December 17, 2004 200,000 Euro penalty for late entry for America’s Cup Race in Valencia, Spain. The “good News”; we could see as many as 12 syndicates competing in 2007. I will post the paid list after December 17th and available E-Mail contacts. VO7, Valencia and ACM, America’s Cup Management are working together well for readiness for 2007.

King Juan Carlos met with President Bush in the US for a little fence mending. He also greeted the Cup Challengers in Valencia. He viewed the improvements and was the 18th man on board Alinghi vs. Emirates Team New Zealand in a race, Emirates defeated Alinghi. The King graciously gave Bertarelli and Bonnefous his endorsement. Maybe eight syndicates for sure, one thing is certain, it will be a venue we all will treasure, the America’s Cup Race, Valencia, Spain, 2007. Check here for syndicate updates and information after December 17th. Here are names currently involved; the following seem definite to compete; Team Shosholoza, South Africa, +39, Italy, Luna Rossa, Italy, K Challenge, France, (Dawn Riley,Manager); Emirates Team New Zealand, and BMW Oracle Racing. US. Maybe we will see the following; Spain, two groups trying to put together syndicates, GBR. Britain, a German Challenger, plus others scrambling for money.

VOLVO 2005 AROUND THE WORLD COURSE ANNOUNCED

See Volvo web site; www.volvooceanrace.org.  Get out your Atlas, the race starts Vigo, Spain to Cape Town, to Melbourne, to Rio de Janeiro, to Baltimore, to New York, to UK, to Amsterdam to finish at Goteborg, Sweden.

MOST OUTSTANDING SAILING EVENT OF 2004

French sailor, Francis Joyon, multi-hull, single handed round the world - 72D, 22H, 54M, 22S.

BEST SURPRISE NEWS - NEW ZEALAND WILL BE IN VALENCIA!

After their defeat, it was chaos. Grant Dalton, new blood, new team, new attitude, Rod Davis, afterguard coach, new money, from Bertarelli, that is class. World sailing experience other than Southern Hemisphere is part of the plan.

TECH TALK - AC CLASS RULE 4 AND 5

Nothing can be more parlous than delving into the technical intricacies of sailing. For most of us, “doing” sailing is better than trying to understand the hydrodynamics. Leave VPP, V/L o.5. Cv, wave drag, righting moment, SM, LM, and all of the other mysterious acronyms to the Naval Architects, Engineers and those born with tech genes. Suffice it to say that all is a balancing act between variables of length, displacement and sail area coupled with design concepts to maximize speed and minimize drag. The new materials and overall technology have done for sailing what digital cameras have done for photography, created a revolution.

The next advance remains for the mind to be conditioned to make consistently the reflexive intuitive decisions instantly to “win”.

MOVING FORWARD - BERTARELLI AND COUTTS

Get over it ! These are two very bright men maybe on different courses to the same mark. The better bout remains, Bertarelli vs. Ellison.
