America's Cup Class Rule Kudos to America's Cup Properties for the presentation of the America's Cup Class Rule. Click here to read the entire document. WARNING, it is fifty four pages (PDF file) of extremely detailed specifications and regulations. For those of a technical bent, all specs are there. Valencia, Spain - The
Real News
Now, the attention goes to which countries and syndicates will come up with the money to compete, the ante is no less than some 50 million euros to fully fund crew, boat or boats, and training and a presence for the next three years. Design considerations consistent with the Class Rule are paramount. An extra man is now allowed, 17 crew and the 18th, a VIP addition. We see at present the following scurrying to compete for men and money. New Zealand, Italy, { 3 groups}, Spain, United States {Oracle}, Alinghi of Switzerland as Defender, Great Britain, France,{K Challenge and maybe Team France}, and even Australia. We see at least ten with three more possible. Russell Coutts of Alinghi made a sage comment, "It is how you spend your money that counts, not exactly how much". We will see ! A preview regatta will be held with Alinghi and others in Newport, Rhode Island on June 19th to 26th, 2004. Dawn Riley
"The next Cup in Valencia is a new frontier for the America's Cup. Never before has a landlocked nation won the Cup. Never before has a Cup been hosted in a non-English speaking country. Never before has it been marketed so well and has it been so fair. Never before has it been so unsure of "who will show up". The costs got out of control last time around and even though the budgets this time do NOT need to be as high as Oracle says, potential funders are a little nervous and are taking their time to make decisions. Time will tell."
